Tips To Keep In Mind When Renting A Storage Unit In The Summer

by William Fleury

Are you in need of temporary storage this summer while in the middle of a move or while taking on additional season inventory for your business? If you will need to put some important items into one or more storage units, it's important to keep the summer season in mind. Specifically, the hot temperatures summer brings might pose a problem if you don't choose carefully. Here are some tips to keep in mind in order to protect your belongings when using a self-storage facility in the summer.

Consider Climate Control If Possible

The easiest solution if you are concerned about hot summer temperatures while using a self-storage facility is to seek out  units that offer climate control. If you can set the exact temperature of the unit and have confidence that the climate control system will do its job, you can rest easy about putting your potentially vulnerable items into storage. Beyond controlling the temperature, you may also want to inquire about a unit that has a dehumidifier in order to manage humidity as well.

Pick a Unit That's Out of the Sun

If climate control is not in the cards for you for some reason, you'll have to pivot and pick the best unit that you can. If you have an option between an indoor unit and and an outdoor one, pick the one that is indoors and out of the sun. If you must use an outdoor unit without climate control, try and find one that has some amount of shade over it at least during part of the day.

Protect Items Sensitive to Temperature or Humidity

If you are putting expensive electronics or other items that are sensitive to humidity into self storage without climate control, you should work to put protective coverings over these items. In fact, you should probably cover the items up just to be safe even if you do have climate control. Bubble wrap or other types of sleeving may help protect the vulnerable items from humidity.

Keep Items Off the Floor

If possible, use shelves inside the storage space in order to promote air flow throughout the unit and also to get the items off of the concrete ground. The concrete floor in a non-climate control storage unit may be prone to developing moisture due to humidity. Elevate your items while keeping them covered to limit the potential trouble.

For best results when picking a self storage unit this summer, seek out one with climate control over both temperature and humidity but be sure to protect your items as best you can regardless of which type of unit you end up renting.

About Me

using a storage unit to create more space

Having two small children in a small two bedroom apartment is challenging. I want my kids to have everything that they want or need, but the lack of space made it kind of difficult to do so without creating a cluttered space for us all to live in. I was talking with another mother in the building where we live and she told me about a storage facility that she uses for the overflow from her house. She explained what she keeps in the unit and how she manages to keep it in perfect condition while it is being stored. Find out what I learned and how I use my storage unit on my blog.
